Meniscal allograft replacement can lead to mid-term improvements in pain, symptoms and functional status after meniscectomy in properly selected patients with progressive degenerative arthritis, researchers in the United States suggest.
Substantial pain relief and improved function seen earlier in patients with exposed sub-chondral bone was not durable, report investigators led by Dr. Richard Ryu of Santa Barbara, California. “However, statistically significant early and mid-term improvements in pain, symptoms and functional status continue to be noteworthy in the properly selected patient,” they say.
The researchers followed 25 patients for a minimum of 12 months and an average of 33 months. They note progressive degenerative arthritis leads to premature pain and functional loss in the post-meniscectomy state. Meniscal allograft replacement is a potential suitable, early treatment alternative for the at-risk population.
