Although the current goal of therapy is to salvage and reconstruct extremities after limb-threatening wounds, sickness impact scores for those who had this treatment were no better than for those who had less expensive amputation, according to a report in the Dec. 12 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine.
“Patients with limbs at high risk for amputation can be advised that reconstruction typically results in two-year outcomes equivalent to those of amputation,” write Michael J. Bosse, MD, from the Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, North Carolina, and colleagues.
