Medical assessments of work disability following occupational low back trouble are less predictive of post injury recovery than a patient’s own appraisal, say Canadian researchers. While comprehensive medical assessments were crucial in the early identification of serious pathology, they did not identify evaluation variables to “account for significant proportions of variance in return to work.”
A review of previous studies of work disability prediction of low back trouble prognosis showed results were equivocal with respect to predictive usefulness of medical variables.
