High doses of the inhaled corticosteroid fluticasone may lead to acute adrenal gland malfunction, resulting in coma, convulsions, or death, warn researchers in the December issue of Archives of Diseases of Childhood.
Children are particularly vulnerable, Dr. Geoff R. Todd, of Antrim Area Hospital in Belfast, Northern Ireland, told Reuters Health. He and others asked 2,912 pediatricians and adult endocrinologists whether they had ever encountered any cases of acute adrenal crisis associated with inhaled corticosteroids. Seven hundred nine (24%) responded.
