Long-term follow-up of patients with early rheumatoid arthritis (RA) indicates that neuroticism is the most consistent predictor of subsequent anxiety and depression, Dutch researchers report in the November issue of the Journal of Rheumatology.
Dr. Andrea W. M. Evers of University Medical Center St. Raboud, Nijmegen, and colleagues note that although most RA patients “seem to adjust well to the disease…about 20% suffer heightened levels of anxiety and depression.”
