There is no lack of expression and activation of bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs) at the sites of delayed fracture unions and non-unions, researches in the United States report.
They found that while non-unions of long duration demonstrated evidence of ongoing BMP-signalling, the profiles of BMP, BMP-receptor and pSmad1 (signal transduction molecule) immunostaining were heterogeneous in a group of 21 patients with delayed fracture unions or non-unions.
“The potential use of BMPs to promote bone-healing is of great interest to orthopaedic surgeons,” explain investigators from the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City.
