Living chondrocytes can be maintained in vitro on allogenic devitalized cartilage grafts for at least a month, researchers report, suggesting that clinically useful graft material can be produced. Previous attempts at developing semisynthetic cartilage tissue have been hindered by immune reactions altering the morphology and structural integrity of the graft following its implantation into the host.
In a new approach, Dr. Timothy F. Kelley and associates at the University of California Irvine examined the feasibility of using devitalized cartilage as a scaffold and described their results in Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery for October.
