Two new markers of collagen synthesis and degradation appear to be useful in predicting which patients with knee osteoarthritis (OA) are likely to experience rapid progression of joint damage, according to a recent report.
OA joint damage is thought to result from loss of articular cartilage. Previous reports have shown that synthesis and degradation of type II collagen, the major protein in the cartilage matrix, is altered in patients with OA. Therefore, the ability to detect altered collagen metabolism may be useful in predicting joint damage.
