Ultrasound Guided Aspiration Improves Rate Of Diagnostic Synovial Fluid

British clinicians have found that ultrasound (US) guided aspiration of synovial fluid for diagnosis may lead to a more accurate administration of local steroid therapy.

Their study, carried out by rheumatologists at the Center for Rheumatic Diseases, University Department of Medicine, Glasgow Royal Infirmary, and Gartnavel General Hospital, Glasgow, Scotland, the importance of US as a useful tool in clinical rheumatological practice. Among the patients assigned to the conventional technique, 32 joints in 30 consecutive patients referred for joint aspiration and injection aspiration was carried out by an experienced rheumatologist.

In contrast, 31 consecutive patients were examined by US to confirm the presence and location of fluid. After the US examination, aspiration was performed by a second rheumatologist based on the US localization of fluid or under direct US guidance.
