Epidural Analgesia in Labor Not Linked to Postpartum Back Pain

Epidural analgesia during labor does not lead to postpartum back pain, according to the results of a randomized study published in the Aug. 17 issue of the British Medical Journal.

“After childbirth there are no differences in the incidence of long-term low back pain, disability, or movement restriction between women who receive epidural pain relief and women who receive other forms of pain relief,” write Charlotte J. Howell, from North Staffordshire Hospital Trust in the UK, and colleagues
