Hepatitis B Vaccine Safe And Effective in Rheumatoid Arthritis Patients

Hepatitis B vaccine can be safely used to protect patients with rheumatoid arthritis against infection with the virus, according to a report in the July issue of the Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases.

Reports of the appearance of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) after vaccination against tetanus, rubella, and hepatitis B have raised questions about the safety of such vaccines in people already diagnosed with RA, the authors explain.

Dr. Ori Elkayam and colleagues from University of Tel Aviv, Israel compared the responses of 22 RA patients immunized with hepatitis B recombinant vaccine with those of 22 RA patients who did not receive the vaccine.
