PHILADELPHIA, PA — April 15, 2002 — Pre-operative Folstein's mini mental score (MMS), Charlson co-morbidity index (CMI) and albumin level appear to be predictive of post-operative delirium (POD).

The finding, from a prospective study of elderly patients undergoing surgery for treatment of hip fractures, was presented here Friday at the 2002 Annual Session of the American College of Physicians-American Society of Internal Medicine.

Dr. Gary Goldberg and colleagues from New York Methodist Hospital, Brooklyn, New York prospectively enrolled 30 consecutive hip fracture patients, mean age 80.7 years. Patients with pre-operative delirium were excluded. Twenty-one patients were female, 25 were white, 22 were community dwelling and 8 were nursing home residents. Twenty patients were dependent in activities of daily living. Nineteen patients had pre-existing dementia.
