NEW YORK (Reuters Health) Apr 18 – Alendronate therapy provides a significantly greater increase in bone mineral density (BMD) than does raloxifene, but adding raloxifene to alendronate yields an increase comparable to that with alendronate alone, according to results of a multinational study.
Dr. Wim H. Scheele, of Eli Lilly & Co. in Indianapolis, and colleagues randomly assigned 331 postmenopausal women in groups of 82 to 84 to treatment with raloxifene 60 mg/day, alendronate 10 mg/day, a combination of the two agents, or to placebo. Each subject also took a supplement containing calcium 500 mg/day and vitamin D 400 to 600 IU/day. Results after 1 year are published in the March issue of The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism.
