MINNEAPOLIS Minnesota (Reuters) – The suspicious deaths of three men who underwent knee surgery operations at two Minnesota hospitals have prompted a statewide medical alert and probe into the possible causes.

One of the victims, who was in his 60s, died on Friday 3 days after having knee surgery at Douglas County Hospital in Alexandria, officials told the St. Paul Pioneer Press newspaper on Sunday.

Officials said that the death followed those of two other men on November 11. Those men, 23 and 78 years of age, became critically ill and suffered dramatic drops in blood pressure days after knee surgery at St. Cloud Hospital, also in Minnesota.

"The symptoms suggest some kind of infection," Buddy Ferguson, a spokesman for the Minnesota Department of Health, told the newspaper. "It is suspicious and there are apparent similarities among the three," he added. He said that no definite link had been established among the three cases.

Richard Danila, a health department epidemiologist, said anthrax had been ruled out as a possible cause of the men's deaths. The health department, meanwhile, has issued an alert to infectious disease experts and hospitals across Minnesota asking them to advise the authorities if there are other similar cases
