AMA Center for Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Response: A Newsmaker Interview With James J. James, MD, DrPH, MHA

Editor’s Note: The American Medical Association (AMA) has appointed James J. James, MD, DrPH, MHA, the director of the new Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Response center, which has launched to coordinate with federal and state governments and public health groups in responding to terrorist attacks and natural disasters. As director of the Miami-Dade County Health Department from 2000 through 2002, Dr. James played a key role in dealing with the anthrax infections that surfaced after the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, developed a comprehensive response plan for future bioterrorist events, and supervised public health programs throughout the county.

While he was in office, the Miami-Dade Health Department received the Governor’s Sterling Award in 2002 for its performance excellence in management and operations. Dr. James was appointed to Florida Gov. Jeb Bush’s Domestic Security Task Force and as Lead Health Agent for Preparedness and Response for Region 7, which encompasses Miami-Dade, Broward, Palm Beach, West Palm Beach, and Monroe counties. Dr. James has served 26 years with the U.S. Army Medical Department, has been commanding general of the William Beaumont Army Medical Center in El Paso, Texas, and has received the Distinguished Service Medal.
