Patients taking vigabatrin in combination with valproate are more likely to experience greater visual field constriction than those taking vigabatrin with carbamazepine.
C. F. Arndt and colleagues from the Service d’Explorations Fonctionnelles de la Vision, departement de physiologie and clinique neurologique, Hôpital Roger Salengro, Lille, France, explored the effect that vigabatrin in combination with either valproate or carbamazepine has on patients’ visual functioning.
Participants in the study were 64 consecutive patients with a history of partial epileptic seizures who were all being treated with vigabatrin in combination with either carbamazepine or valproate.
The investigators examined each patient’s eye functioning using automated kinetic perimetry, static perimetry, electrooculograms (EOG) and electroretinograms (ERG). They also developed and used an original device based on kinetic perimetry in order to quantify the area of perception for each isopter.
