Algorithm Predicts Cardiovascular Risk in Patients With Retinal Vein Occlusion

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) Jul 10 – The Framingham algorithm can accurately predict cardiovascular risk in patients with retinal vein occlusions (RVO), according to a report in the July issue of the British Journal of Ophthalmology.

 “Patients with RVO are at increased risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD),” Dr. Steve C. Martin and colleagues from Heartlands Hospital, Birmingham, UK, write. They used the Framingham algorithm to examine the future risk of CVD in these patients by calculating coronary heart disease risks (cCHDR) and calculated cardiovascular disease risks (cCVDR) for 89 patients and comparing them with the the standardized risk and the published incidence of coronary heart disease (CHD) in England.
