Visual Field Loss at Diagnosis Predicts Risk of Glaucoma-Related Blindness

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) Jul 04 –

Patients who have moderate-to-advanced visual field loss when diagnosed with glaucoma are at increased risk of progressing to blindness compared with those with no visual field loss at diagnosis, regardless of intraocular pressure, researchers report in the June issue of the American Journal of Ophthalmology.

 Dr. Douglas H. Johnson from the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, and colleagues collected data on 290 patients who were diagnosed with glaucoma from 1965 to 1980. These patients were followed through 1998.
