Possible Link Seen Between Platelet Aggregation Inhibitors and Vascular Disease

Swedish investigators have found a relationship between platelet aggregation inhibitors and optic disc hemorrhages that may indicate an association between such hemorrhages and generalized vascular disease.

Researchers at Malmö University Hospital, Malmö, found that patients with previously undetected glaucoma who were using platelet aggregation inhibitors for diabetes or general vascular disease were significantly more likely to have optic hemorrhages than those using three other drug classes: antihypertensive agents, cholesterol-lowering medication, and anti-diabetic agents.

The researchers screened citizens of Malmö who were between 57 and 79 years old (32,918 subjects) to find individuals with undetected glaucoma. One set of optic disc photographs was taken of each participant and examined for optic disc hemorrhages.
