Retinal Cell Implants Improve Motor Function in Parkinson's Disease

DENVER (Reuters Health) Apr 18 – Implantation of human retinal cells in the brains of patients with Parkinson's disease was safe and well-tolerated in a phase I study reported here Wednesday at the 54th annual meeting of the American Academy of Neurology. In addition, retinal cell implants have resulted in an improvement in motor function.
Dr. Ray L. Watts, of Emory University in Atlanta, presented results of the multicenter study of six patients with moderate to severe Parkinson's disease. "They were still responding to medications, but they showed a lot of fluctuation" with therapy, with the amount of "off" time increasing, Dr. Watts told Reuters Health.
