NEW YORK (MedscapeWire) Apr 15 Oral valganciclovir is equivalent to intravenous ganciclovir for induction therapy for cytomegalovirus (CMV) retinitis, according to results of a randomized trial published in the April 11 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine.
"Orally administered valganciclovir appears to be as effective as intravenous ganciclovir for induction treatment and is convenient and effective for the long-term management of CMV retinitis in patients with AIDS," write Daniel F. Martin, MD, and colleagues from the Valganciclovir Study Group.
