Carboplatin could become a solo first-line chemotherapeutic agent for the treatment of ovarian cancer, according to the latest trial by the International Collaborative Ovarian Neoplasm (ICON) Group.
Carboplatin is less toxic among women, even though it has no overall survival benefit compared with other drugs assessed in the ICON3 study, led by Dr. Peter Harper, oncology specialist at Guy’s Hospital in London, England, and Dr. Nicoletta Colombo, Associate Professor in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the European Institute of Oncology, in Milan, Italy.
Ovarian carcinoma is the sixth most common cancer among women worldwide, and accounts for the greatest number of deaths from gynaecological malignancy in Europe and North America. About 165,000 women are diagnosed with the disease n these countries each year, and at a median age of 55.
