Etoposide plus cisplatin is an effective first-line chemotherapy option for the treatment of patients with metastatic germ cell tumours who have a good prognosis. Researchers from the department of urology, Japanese Red Cross Sendai Hospital, Japan treated 18 patients who had metastatic germ cell tumours with three to five cycles of an induction chemotherapy regimen.
Six of these patients had seminomas and the rest had non-seminomas. Eight patients had Stage II cancers and the rest had Stage III cancers (Stage (n=2), Stage IIIB (n=6), Stage IIIC (n=2)). The treatment regimen consisted of etoposide 100 mg/m² and cisplatin 20 mg/m² given on days one and five and then repeated from day 21.
When tumour markers reached normal levels, the regimen was repeated for two additional cycles. Patients with residual tumour masses underwent debulking surgery as early as possible.
