Follow-up of most testicular germ cell cancers may not be necessary after five years because late recurrence is rare.
Only patients presenting with metastatic non-seminomatous germ cell tumours (NSGCTs) should be followed longer, British researchers suggest. Testicular germ cell cancers are highly curable.
However, approximately 10 to 30 percent of patients experience recurrence after initial treatment. Investigators from the Royal Marsden National Health Service Trust and the Institute of Cancer Research in Surrey, United Kingdom and led by Dr. Mehdi Shahidi assessed recurrence risk and time-course in testicular cancer by reviewing the records of 1,263 patients with this condition attending the Royal Marsden Hospital between December 1979 and December 1993.
