A more convenient 22-day course of breast irradiation after lumpectomy for lymph node-negative breast cancer appears to be an acceptable alternative to the 35-day schedule that is commonly given in the US, according to a report in the August 7th issue of the Journal of the National Cancer Institute.
Timothy Whelan from the Hamilton Regional Cancer Center, Ontario, Canada, and colleagues randomly assigned 1234 women with lymph node-negative breast cancer to whole breast irradiation of 42.5 Gy in 16 fractions given over 22 days or 50 Gy in 25 fractions given over 35 days, after lumpectomy.
The researchers looked for recurrent cancer in the treated breast over a median followup of 69 months. They also assessed the cosmetic outcome using the rating system developed by the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer.
