No environmental factors studied explain the high breast cancer rate seen in Long Island, New York, according to two reports in the August issue of Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers and Prevention.
The Long Island Breast Cancer Study Project was started in 1993 by the National Cancer Institute and the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences to determine, among other things, whether the rate of breast cancer seen in Long Island, which is higher than the national average, has an environmental cause.
“Starting with more than 3000 women in this federally mandated research, we looked at blood samples taken from hundreds of new breast cancer patients and comparable women without breast cancer who served as controls,” lead author Dr. Marilie D. Gammon from the University of North Carolina School of Public Health, Chapel Hill explained in a press statement.
