Male Sex, Low Physical Activity Linked With Lowered Bone Mineral Density In Leukaemia Survivors

Males who survive childhood acute lymphoblastic leukaemia have reduced lumbar bone mineral density but females do not.

 Survivors of acute lymphoblastic leukaemia are physically less active than their healthy counterparts, researchers in Sheffield, England, report. The survivors’ lower activity correlated with lower lumbar bone mineral density and a higher percentage of fat mass.

 The researchers observed that survivors of acute lymphoblastic leukaemia are at risk of osteoporosis and obesity.

 They studied bone mineral density, percentage of fat mass and activity levels in survivors treated without radiotherapy. Using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry an average of five years after completion of chemotherapy the researchers measured lumbar and total area bone mineral density and the percentage of fat mass in 28 survivors of childhood acute lymphoblastic leukaemia aged 5.7-14.7 years. One boy fractured his arm during treatment.
