Women who worked as radiologic technicians before 1950 face a higher risk of breast cancer mortality than women who started to work as radiation technicians later on.
“Our finding probably reflects changing exposures to radiation over time,” United States researchers say.
“Recommended exposure limits for medical radiation workers decreased from 70 rem/year before 1934 to 30 rem/y in 1934, 15 rem/y in 1949 and 5 rem/y in 1958.” Investigators, led by Dr. Aparna K. Mohan of the US National Cancer Institute in Bethesda, Maryland, evaluated breast cancer mortality up to the end of 1997 among 69,525 women certified as US radiologic technicians between 1926 and 1982.
