NEW YORK (Reuters Health) Jun 18 –
Women with advanced breast cancer who have failed anthracycline therapy achieve significantly improved survival with a combination of capecitabine (Xeloda) and docetaxel (Taxotere) compared with docetaxel alone, according to the results of a phase III trial.
Dr. Joyce O’Shaughnessy from the Baylor-Sammons Cancer Center, Dallas, and colleagues treated 511 women who had metastatic breast cancer and who had failed to respond to anthracycline-based chemotherapy. The women were randomly assigned to a combination of oral capecitabine 1250 mg/m twice daily for 2 out of every 3 weeks plus docetaxel 75 mg/m once every 3 weeks, or docetaxel 100 mg/m alone every 3 weeks.
