Epirubicin-Vinorelbine Used In First-Line Chemotherapy For Metastatic Breast Cancer

06/10/2002 By Elda Hauschildt

A combination of epirubicin-vinorelbine with granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) support is reported to be highly active as first-line chemotherapy for metastatic breast cancer. There was, however, significant, although transient, toxicity in a phase II multi-centre trial of the combination in 97 patients, say Italian researchers.

They concluded their results justify further evaluation in the neo-adjuvant setting and in early-stage breast cancer. Investigators from six research centres in Rome, Bari, Catania, Palermo, Taranto and Tricase note trial participants had no prior exposure to anthracyclines.

Patients were given 100 mg/m² epirubicin by intravenous (IV) bolus infusion on day one and 25 mg/m² vinorelbine by 30-minute IV infusion on days one and five, every three weeks up to eight cycles. All patients received G-CSF on days seven to 12 of every cycle.
