An Anti-Atherosclerosis Aid For Adults With Hyperhomocysteinemia?

Long-term folic acid improves arterial endothelial function and may have the potential to prevent atherosclerosis in adults with hyperhomocysteinemia, a three-country study suggest. Hyperhomocysteinemia is a risk factor for atherosclerosis and linked with endothelial dysfunction, which can be improved with short-term folic acid supplementation.

Whether folic acid supplementation might produce longer-term improvements in homocysteine levels and arterial endothelial function was the question addressed in this study from The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong, Kent and Sussex Hospital, Tunbridge Wells, England and University of Sydney, Sydney, Australia addressed.

The researchers selected 29 healthy adults with hyperhomocysteinemia from among 89 volunteers in a community-based atherosclerosis screening project. The 29 subjects received folic acid (10 mg/d) for one year.

 They were measured for fasting plasma homocysteine levels by high-performance liquid chromatography, and their arterial endothelial function was measured as flow-mediated dilation of the brachial artery via high-resolution B-mode ultrasound.

One year of folic acid supplementation was found to be linked with a significant increase in the subjects’ mean plasma folate levels and a significant decline in their homocysteine levels.
