Specific Measures Of Quality of Life May Be More Effective Than Generic Measures

Post-thrombotic syndrome has a significant impact on health-related quality of life that may well not be captured by generic quality-of-life measures.

Moreover, as this syndrome worsens, so does its negative effect on peoples’ lives, a study in Canada has found. Until now, the impact on patients of post-thrombotic syndrome (PTS), a frequent chronic complication of deep venous thrombosis, has not been well characterised. This study compared generic and venous disease-specific qualify of life (QOL) in patients with and without PTS and also assessed whether QOL correlated with PTS severity.

 Forty-one people with a mean age of 51.2 took part in this examination of the effects of exercise after deep venous thrombosis done by Susan R. Kahn and colleagues from the Sir Mortimer B. Davis Jewish General Hospital, Montreal, Quebec.

Subjects completed both generic and disease-specific QOL measures. These measures were the (generic) 36-Item Short-Form Health Survey and the (disease-specific) Venous Insufficiency Epidemiologic and Economic Study quality-of-life questionnaire (VEINES-QOL) and its validated subscale of 10 items on venous symptoms (VEINES-Sym) quality-of-life measures.
