Adding goserelin to adjuvant therapy protects long-term ovarian function in pre-menopausal women with early-stage breast cancer.
Italian researchers from the Ospedale Civile di Avezzano, Fondazione Carlo Ferri, Universita Cattolica del Sacro Cuore and the Universita de L’Aquila investigated the use of goserelin in 64 pre-menopausal women with early breast cancer (27 to 50, median age 42 years).
Twenty-eight patients (44 percent) had estrogen receptor positive tumours (ER+); 36 (56 percent) had ER negative tumours. Most patients (52 or 81 percent) had stage II disease; only 12 patients (19 percent) had stage III disease. Participants received 3.6 milligrams of goserelin every 28 days for one year.
Adjuvant therapy was chosen according to each patient’s prognosis: 18 received cyclophosphamide, methotrexate and 5-fluorouracil chemotherapy; 46 received an anthracycline-based regiment and nine received high-dose chemotherapy and autologous peripheral blood progenitor cell transplantation. Fifty-one patients (80 percent) were irradiated and ER+ patients also received tamoxifen for five years.
