Leanness in lung cancer patients is an artifact of the effects of smoking and preexisting disease, rather than a causal factor, according to a report in the May issue of Epidemiology. Numerous studies have reported an association between leanness and lung cancer risk, and some researchers have suggested that leanness may have a causal effect.
To investigate, Dr. S. Jane Henley, of the American Cancer Society, Atlanta, Georgia, and colleagues compared lung cancer death rates with body mass index in 941,105 patients enrolled in a prospective study in 1982.
