ORLANDO, FL — May 28, 2002 —
A significant proportion of patients with a prostate specific antigen (PSA) test value of less than 4 ng/mL will have a positive digital rectal exam (DRE) and a poorly differentiated cancer, supporting the use of DRE during prostate cancer screening.
Dr. Aldo A Ghobriel, with the University of Texas Health Science Center, San Antonio, Texas, and colleagues reported the findings here Sunday at the annual meeting of the American Urological Association (AUA). Currently, an annual DRE is recommended for all men older than 50 years of age and for all high-risk males over 40 (including African-Americans and those with a family history).
According to the researchers, about 18 percent of cancers detected in screening programs are in men with a PSA value of less than 4 ng/mL and an abnormal DRE. However, patients perceive the DRE as being uncomfortable. In addition, the reproducibility of the DRE is low
and dependent on the examiner.
