ORLANDO, FL — May 23, 2002 —
Treatment with the radiolabeled monoclonal antibody ibritumomab tiuxetan (Zevalin) preserves sensitivity to subsequent therapy with rituximab in at least some patients with relapsed or refractory non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma (NHL), including rituximab-refractory patients, according to a recent review of clinical trials.
The review was conducted to evaluate the response rate to rituximab administered subsequent to ibritumomab tiuxetan, said lead study author Fred Saleh, MD, of Sharp Health Care, in San Diego, California, who presented the findings at the 38th Annual Meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO).
Data from a total of 660 patients with relapsed or refractory NHL, from five clinical trials, were analyzed. One-hundred-and-ninety-two patients received therapy subsequent to ibritumomab tiuxetan treatment, of whom 50 (26 percent) received rituximab as the first subsequent therapy.
Response data were available for 31 of 50 patients who received rituximab after ibritumomab tiuxetan, including seven rituximab-refractory patients. Overall, 17 of 31 patients (55 percent) responded to rituximab as first treatment after ibritumomab tiuxetan. Of 23 rituximab-naïve patients who received radioimmunotherapy, 15 (65 percent) responded to rituximab — one complete response, one complete clinical response, and 13 partial responses. Two of the seven rituximab-refractory patients (29 percent) responded to subsequent rituximab after ibritumomab tiuxetan.
