Interim analyses suggest that imatinib is an effective treatment for interferon-resistant chronic phase chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML).
The analysis from a study of 300 patients also found that real-time two-month results from polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing were predictive of cytogenetic response at six months. The results were reported here Sunday at the 38th Annual Meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO).
Andreas Hochhaus, MD of Universitätsklinikum Mannheim der Universität Heidelberg, Mannheim, Germany, and colleagues from centres in Europe and the United States also reported that quantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) is the preferred method for response monitoring in these patients.
The study enrolled 300 patients with BCR/ABL-positive CML from July 1999 to November 2001. The median age was 60 and 173 were men; 136 patients were in late chronic phase, 86 were in acceleration phase and 78 patients were in blast crisis. The patients were treated with imatinib (also called STI571, Glivec, or Gleevec) at doses ranging from 400 mg/day to 800 mg/day.
