Tamoxifen’s Maximum Benefit Achieved after Chemotherapy

ORLANDO, FL — May 20, 2002 —

To achieve maximum benefit, adjuvant tamoxifen therapy should be initiated after completion of adjuvant chemotherapy for treatment of hormone receptor-positive breast cancer, researchers say.

“Initiating tamoxifen at the same time as chemotherapy makes tamoxifen half as effective in preventing recurrent breast cancer,” said lead investigator Kathy S. Albain, MD, of Loyola University Medical Center, Maywood, Illinois, United States. She said that initiating tamoxifen after chemotherapy is associated with “an 18 percent improvement in disease-free survival.”

Moreover, the chemotherapy followed by tamoxifen demonstrated “a 12 percent absolute benefit over tamoxifen alone.” The findings are “unequivocal, tamoxifen after chemotherapy should be the new standard of care,” she said at a press conference. Dr. Albain presented the findings here Sunday at the 38th Annual Meeting of the American Society for Clinical Oncology (ASCO).
