NEW YORK (MedscapeWire) May 01 In patients with increasing prostate specific antigen (PSA) levels after prostatectomy, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can detect recurrent prostate cancer earlier than biopsy. Data presented on April 29 at the American Roentgen Ray Society annual meeting in Atlanta, Georgia, suggest that MRI should therefore be the procedure of choice to determine subsequent radiation.
"MRI is allowing us to detect the recurrence earlier, when the cancer can be more effectively treated with radiation therapy," lead author Miki Takeda, MD, from Sapporo Medical University in Japan, says in a news release.
In Takeda's experience, about 30% of patients have rising PSA levels after radical prostatectomy, which nearly always indicates a cancer recurrence. However, negative biopsy may delay definitive diagnosis and treatment.
