NEW YORK (Reuters Health) Apr 18 – The addition of positron emission tomography (PET) to the routine workup of patients with suspected non-small-cell lung cancer can significantly reduce the number of futile thoracotomies, according to a report by Dutch researchers.
Dr. Harm van Tinteren, from the Comprehensive Cancer Centre Amsterdam, and colleagues assessed the outcomes of 188 patients with suspected non-small-cell lung cancer who were scheduled for surgery. The patients were randomized to undergo conventional workup with or without PET. The followup period was 1 year.
