AACR: Metabolic Factors Associated with Body Weight May Heighten Breast Cancer Risk

SAN FRANCISCO, CA — April 10, 2002 — New research findings presented at the 93rd Annual Meeting of the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) highlight metabolic factors that tend to increase with body weight and may help explain why being overweight increases breast cancer risk.

Higher body weight is known to increase risk for post-menopausal breast cancer. Elevated estrogen levels, known to be related to increased breast cancer risk, and insulin resistance, proposed to be related to breast cancer risk, tend to accompany higher body weight. Other findings presented here offer new insights into a possible link between breast cancer and weight gain in pregnancy.
