MINNEAPOLIS (Reuters Health) Apr 10 – A new approach to screening blood for malaria may help decrease malaria transmission through blood transfusion. The preliminary results from a study published in the March issue of Transfusion show that combined detection of malaria antigens and antibodies may increase screening sensitivity and help facilitate population screening.
This combined screening approach would provide an alternative to the method currently approved in France, the immunofluorescent antibody test (IFAT), which screens only for malaria antibodies. Although this test is simple, highly sensitive, and has shown success in preventing transfusion-transmitted malaria, it is not useful as a screening tool for populations, according to Dr. Jeffrey McCullough, journal editor.
