Levels of plasma endostatin and serum angiogenin could indicate prognosis in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC).
Researchers from Hull Royal Infirmary and the University of Hull, England, enrolled 30 patients with HNSCC in a pilot study to evaluate levels of basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF), angiogenin (ANG) and endostatin as tumour markers and prognostic factors. The authors also enrolled 15 healthy controls.
Levels of the cytokines were not raised in HNSCC patients compared to controls. Levels of bFGF in serum were not associated with any clinical, pathological or outcome measure. However, bFGF showed a non-significant trend towards higher levels among patients with more advanced, aggressive tumours.
