LONDON (Reuters Health) Mar 26 – Serotonin triggers apoptosis in Burkitt lymphoma cells in vitro, suggesting the this effect could be exploited in new treatments for the malignancy, British researchers reported on Tuesday. They also noted that fluoxetine and other selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors inhibit this effect.
Professor John Gordon of Birmingham University and colleagues investigated whether serotonin could encourage apoptosis in the neoplastic B cells seen in Burkitt lymphoma, which is a substantial health problem in equatorial Africa, Brazil and Papua-New Guinea and develops in 2% of AIDS patients.
