Once daily insulin glargine provides basal control of glycaemia in type 1 and 2 diabetes without plasma insulin peaks.
It is likely to be a useful new form of insulin therapy, according to researchers in Langhorne, Pennsylvania, United States. Available as a subcutaneous injection, glargine is indicated for adults and children over age six years with type 1 diabetes and in adults with type 2 diabetes.
The researchers report that long-term, well designed trials had shown that once-daily insulin glargine worked at least as well as Neutral Protamine Hagedorn insulin taken once or twice daily. It was also well tolerated and did not seem to be immunogenic, the researchers said. In most studies, there was significantly less night-time hypoglycaemia than with Neutral Protamine Hagedorn insulin.
