LONDON (Reuters) Mar 15 – A breast cancer drug that experts say could help thousands of British women finally won the backing of the UK's drugs cost watchdog NICE on Friday.
So far only a few British hospitals have made Herceptin available because they have been waiting for guidance from the National Institute of Clinical Excellence, which decides which drugs the hard-pressed state health service can buy.
Critics say the delay has cost lives.
Herceptin, made by Swiss company Roche and U.S. biotechnology firm Genentech, costs up to 13,000 pounds ($18,470) per course of treatment.
