The cancer preventive effects of selenium seem to result from its ability to activate the p53 tumor suppressor protein, according to a report published in the September 23rd early edition of the Proceedings from the National Academy of Sciences.
More than two decades of research has shown that selenium can prevent breast and colon cancers in animal tumor models. Moreover, findings from a recent human trial suggest that use of the mineral may help prevent prostate cancer. Despite these encouraging results, little is known about the anti-cancer mechanisms that are involved.
