FLORENCE, Italy (Reuters Health) Jul 02 –
A plan to trim escalating rates of obesity in Italy will be presented at the next State-Region Conference, health minister Girolamo Sirchia has announced.
Speaking at the launch in Milan of the fourth report on “Obesity in Italy,” Sirchia said the plan would re-tool diabetes centres to handle a range of obesity-related disease, while private sponsorship will fund government campaigns to encourage fitness and re-launch the Mediterranean diet.
The decision follows an alarming report by the Istituto Auxologico, which showed that obesity currently affects 9% of the population, and that every 4-5 years the number of obese people increased by 25%.
