A strong genetic component to coeliac disease has been found in the largest study of its kind among pairs of monozygotic (concordance rate 0.86 probandwise and 0.75 pairwise) and dizygotic twins (concordance rate 0.20 probandwise and 0.11 pairwise), dependant on the HLA region.
Pairs were selected by Dr Luigi Greco and colleagues at the Department of Paediatrics, Naples University, Naples, Italy, on the basis that one belonged to the Italian Coeliac Disease Association (AIC).
The clinicians point out that while a high concordance rate for coeliac disease (CD) in twins is not a new concept, earlier data were based on case list studies. There has not been a fully informative population based study that includes dizygotic (DZ) as well as monozygotic (MZ) twins from a clinical series.
