FRANKFURT (Reuters) – German drugs group Merck KGaA said on Wednesday it had withdrawn two drugs based on the organic product Kava due to concerns over possible damaging side effects on the liver.
Merck said the two nonprescription treatments, kavadura 120 mg and Kytta-Kava, used to relax people suffering from physical or nervous exhaustion, were sold exclusively in Germany and had annual sales of well under 500,000 euros ($439,400).
The company said German government tests had shown 24 suspected cases of side effects on the liver and said a connection with the kava-based products could not be ruled out, although there was no indication of any liver problems arising from use of its treatments.
